Business Break-Even: worked example

This is an illustrative scenario using the default inputs, not your personal result. Amounts use AED for illustration; the general formula also accepts your own figures in the selected currency.

Example inputs
InputExample value
Monthly fixed costsAED 20,000.00
Selling price per unitAED 150.00
Variable cost per unitAED 60.00

Units to break even per month: 223 units

  • Revenue at this whole-unit volume: AED 33,450.00
  • Contribution per unit: AED 90.00

Before you use this estimate

Use fixed costs, selling price and variable cost from the same period and product mix. Check that your business can actually sell the required whole-unit volume.

What if variable cost is equal to or greater than selling price?

There is no positive contribution per sale to cover fixed costs. The tool flags this instead of presenting a misleading break-even volume.

How the calculation works

Break-even units = fixed costs / (selling price − variable cost), rounded up to whole units.

Assumptions & limitations

Single-product or constant sales-mix model. Excludes tax, finance costs unless entered, and capacity constraints.

Use the result thoughtfully

Try a second scenario to see how a change in costs, timing or contributions affects the result. Keep all amounts in one currency and use consistent periods. Confirm important figures against your own records before acting.
